I Use REAL To Help Organizations Thrive

Justice A Human

Helping an organization thrive begins by helping an organization’s leaders reflect (and act) on the right questions. Using REAL can help.

Reality:

  • Per the organization’s reason for existing (and key performance metrics), what is working/growing and what is failing/shrinking?  Any hypotheses about the root causes?
  • What are the cultural norms of behavior within each department, and what is the current incentive structure for individuals/groups in each department?

Empathy:

  • How are the individuals/groups the organization serves impacted by current reality?  And how might the good impacts be increased and the bad impacts be reduced?
  • How are the organization’s owners/employees impacted by current reality?  And how might the good impacts be increased and the bad impacts be reduced?

Aspiration:

  • Vision: What does a better future all stakeholders can get excited about look like?
  • Values: What are the core beliefs (and key behaviors) all stakeholders will embrace (and hold each other accountable to live) on the path to the better future?

Logic:

  • Decision Making Process: Per the vision and values, how will the organization make decisions to navigate the path to the better future?
  • Experimentation Process: Per the vision and values, how will the organization set up and track the effectiveness of new efforts?

That’s REAL to me.
